RDG 555 Foundational Knowledge Exam

Question One Imagine you are meeting with a group of school volunteers who have agreed to assist with your reading program. The principal has asked you to help volunteers understand the major components of reading, as well as best practices and innovative resources teachers use to teach reading. In particular, the principal hopes you’ll help volunteers better understand the following, especially as these relate to children’s reading development: Question Two Describe a literacy classroom in which it is clearly evident that the principles of differentiated instruction are applied. What would the physical environment look like? What materials and methods would be observed? What types of teacher-student and student-student interaction would be evident? How would content, process, and product be differentiated during instruction in the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing)? What types of groupings would be used to increase student engagement and learning? In your response, explain how and why the setting that you describe facilitates literacy learning. Question Three Identify and explain the critical issues for the design and delivery of literacy instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse learners. In your response, examine the needs of all learners with regard to culture, gender, age, and stages of development. Include a thorough discussion of important considerations for the selection of appropriate materials and methods. Also include two detailed examples of technology integration for the teaching of reading and writing for diverse groups of learners. Finally, provide a rationale for each of your recommendations. Question Four Technology has been integrated into all aspects of the classroom. This integration includes areas of planning, organization, data gathering, lesson delivery and both informal and formal assessment of reading and writing ability. Describe how technology can be used as a formal (standard) and informal assessment in the classroom for the diagnosis and evaluation of students’ reading and writing abilities. Describe how technology can be used to assess students’ interests in reading and how it can be used to increase motivation in these areas. Include in your answer how technology can be used to assist the teacher with instructional planning to increase student interest and performance in reading and writing. Question Five Describe how literacy assessment impacts the instruction of all learners including those from linguistically or culturally diverse backgrounds and learners at differing development stages. How will you go about collecting pertinent student data and analyzing the data? If the results of your data analysis indicate that you have several struggling readers, how can you use the data to inform planning and preparation, classroom environment, and instruction? How can continual literacy assessment be used to meet the needs of struggling readers? Describe ways in which this assessment data can be used to inform others, including other school staff, administrators, and parents? Question Six After you obtain information about students’ interests, student’s reading abilities, and students’ backgrounds, how would you use that information to guide your instructional practices, approaches and methods, and selection of supplemental curriculum materials? What factors would you consider? How will you continue to use appropriate assessments to create an environment that fosters reading and writing? Question Seven What does a literate environment that fosters reading and writing look like in a classroom setting? What are some examples of books and technology-based information that would be evident? What factors would you need to consider to meet the needs of all students? How would you ensure that these materials represent multiple levels, broad interests, andĀ culturalĀ and linguistic backgrounds of all students? Question Eight Reading teachers should stay current in professional knowledge and continually assess their dispositions toward reading and the teaching of reading. Why is this important? How would you go about developing a professional growth plan related to the continual development of current professional knowledge and appropriate dispositions? Describe what kind of professional development activities you will participate in. How will you support your colleagues as they pursue their professional growth? Be sure to provide examples and connect your answer with research to support your statements
